Virtual Therapy
Research continues to affirm the efficacy of virtual therapy, with studies showing meeting virtually is as effective as face-to-face treatments.
What is Virtual Therapy?
Virtual therapy is psychotherapy that occurs between a licensed counselor and a client online rather than at a physical location.
How does it work?
Once we’ve decided teletherapy is a good fit for you, it’s important you identify a quiet, comfortable, and private room that is equipped with a computer, reliable internet access, and webcam. I use Spruce Health to conduct safe, confidential, and private counseling sessions.
How is this different than traditional in-person counseling?
Other than not being in the same room together, there is little difference. There are also some advantages to online counseling that are worth mentioning! It is:
Accessible - no need to get in your car to go anywhere. Relief is a click away.
Appointment flexibility and efficiency - impacts work/school schedules less; no traffic!
Sharing online resources in real time
Comfortable - settle into your perfect chair in the comfort of your own home.
Increased privacy and confidentiality - no public waiting areas.
Your pets are at the ready to help you regulate
Increased risk-taking and vulnerability in what we talk about
Eases stigma
Is virtual therapy actually effective?
Short answer: Yes. Research has consistently shown that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns, including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and life transitions.
The biggest predictor of successful therapy isn't whether you're sitting in an office or on your couch - it's the relationship you build with your therapist. Virtual therapy simply gives you the flexibility to do that from wherever you're most comfortable.
Is virtual therapy right for me?
Virtual therapy is a great fit for many people, especially if you have a busy schedule, travel frequently, work from home, live far from your therapist, or simply feel more comfortable in your own space.
All you need is a private location, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.
What if I've never been to therapy before?
You're in good company.
Many of my clients come to therapy wondering what they're "supposed" to say or worrying they'll do it wrong. (Good news: there isn't a right way.)
You don't need to have everything figured out before we start. Bring what's happening, and we'll make sense of it together.
Do I have to be in crisis to start therapy?
Not at all.
Many people begin therapy because something simply feels...off. Maybe anxiety is taking up more space than you'd like. Maybe relationships feel harder than they should. Maybe you're tired of carrying everything on your own.
You don't have to wait until things fall apart before reaching out.
What should I expect during the first session?
Our first session is a chance to get to know each other.
We'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy, what you'd like to get out of our work together, and any questions you have. There's no pressure to tell your entire life story in one appointment.
Think of it as the beginning of a conversation - not an interrogation.
Is virtual therapy confidential?
Yes. Sessions are held through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform designed to protect your privacy. Just like in-person therapy, what we discuss remains confidential, with the standard legal and ethical exceptions that I'll review with you during our first appointment.
Are videos recorded?
No. There are no permanent videos or voice recording kept of our online sessions. Your privacy and confidentiality are of the upmost importance so great measures are taken to protect them.
What if I cry?
Honestly? Then you cry.
People laugh in therapy. They cry in therapy. Sometimes they do both within five minutes. All of it is welcome.
There isn't a "right" way to show up here.
Can I join from my car?
If your car is parked in a private location where you won't be interrupted, yes.
That said, whenever possible, I encourage clients to find a quiet, comfortable space where they can fully settle in and have a little privacy.
What if my internet cuts out?
Technology happens. If we lose connection, I'll reconnect with you as quickly as possible. We'll have a backup plan in place so you're never left wondering what to do.
Do I have to talk the whole time?
Definitely not. Some days you'll have plenty to say. Other days you may not know where to start.
That's okay. Helping people untangle thoughts, feelings, and patterns is kind of my thing.
